Walter Joseph Phillips, Zinnias, 1928, woodcut on paper, ed. 22/100. Collection of Glenbow; Purchased, 1955 One scene, two very different artworks. The first work here is a chromolithograph print titled Loss of the McLellan and created in 1855. The second work is by American artist William Bradford and is based on the print. In this painting, called The English Arctic Expedition in Search of Sir John Franklin (ca. 1870 -1879), Bradford has conspicuously restructured the original image. By restaging the figures emphasizing the foreground ice, adding a distant iceberg and darkening the sky, Bradford has heightened the drama and depth of the scene. By simply introducing sails to the ship masts, Bradford adds a sense of immediacy missing from the print. While the first image is potentially a more realistic version of the event, Bradford’s is more compelling.
